Enjoying patio furniture

Nowadays with the ever increasing temperature hikes, patio’s are becoming more and more popular as people now have more reason to stay outside for longer periods of time,

If you’re fortunate enough to have room outside your house to make a patio area you would be wise to take advantage of the space, and make yourself a place where you can relax outside the confines of your home.

Making a patio is a very enjoyable experience, for me that is, but this article is intended to show you too how rewarding building such a project can be.

I’ve spent many years helping home owners construct the patio of their dreams, one where they can enjoy proper placement of their patio furniture, and I’m now willing to share all the knowledge I’ve gained in taking a dull, and unenthusiastic part of a garden, and help you transform it into a place of tranquility.

With the right knowledge and dedication, I’m going to show you over time how easy it is for anyone, regardless of their handyman skills to make themselves a patio area that will make them the envy of the neighborhood.

I’m going to take you step by step through the process, and regardless of the overall dimensions of your chosen space, the basic principal will remain the same. One thing I will point out and I would like you to consider is that it’s as easy to do the job right, as it is to make it wrong. Taking your time and learning the correct way will make it a much rewarding experience.

Choosing a spot:

First of all we need to choose a spot outside of our home that will be adequate for our patio area. A place that will compliment any type of patio furniture we decide to use. Some people have the luxury of having a place that is south facing. This is probably the best position, as you’ll reap the benefits of longer periods of sun. However don’t be worried should you happen to find that your chosen position faces north. Some people don’t necessarily relish in the prospect of unlimited sun, as they would prefer a much more shaded area. It’s worth pointing out that a well designed patio, that is well equipped will give you endless opportunity to remain outside, with your family and friends well throughout the evening, regardless of it’s geographical position.

Surfaces for Patio Furniture

Surface Type:

Although the term “Patio” originally means backyard/ backyard that is a paved area, it has become widely used to describe a number of surfaces suitable for positioning furniture.

The easiest one of course would be a lawn that has already been established. This wouldn’t require anything other than placing your chosen patio set.

You then have concrete, which can be poured and given a colored, textured surface. Or you could use pre- formed concrete slabs/pavers, which are placed in sequence.

Loose gravel, or small stone can also be used providing that the thickness of the stone doesn’t exceed 1” Before using this particular method, the ground underneath the stone has to be stable, as the stone is merely for decoration, as opposed to having any structural qualities.

Another alternative to slabs/pavers is using broken off cuts of previously broken slabs. This method became extremely popular throughout Europe during the 20th Century, and is commonly known as “crazy paving” The advantages of this type of surface is that you get the benefit of stone, but the pieces are smaller, enabling you to pave irregular area’s. A very cheap and effective way to form a base.

A wooden surface, often called a deck is a great favorite. This has the ability to give a warm natural feeling, and when combined with wooden furniture, will leave you feeling at home with Mother Nature.

A similar method to using small particles of stone would be using loose tree bark. This is also merely cosmetic, and the underlying surface should be stable.

As you can see, there are a number of alternatives of building products that one can use.
